ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok are the four big AI assistants. All four can write, summarize, brainstorm, analyze files and help with code. The real differences are in what each does best, how they fit into the tools you already use, and how much the paid plans cost.

This guide gives you a plain-English comparison so you can pick one, or decide whether you need more than one.

The quick answer

Most people only need one paid assistant. If you regularly switch between several, see the bundle option at the end.

What the paid plans cost

Approximate US monthly prices, checked October 2026. Annual billing is usually cheaper.

Assistant Entry plan Standard plan Top plan
ChatGPT Go: $8 Plus: $20 Pro: $200
Claude (none) Pro: $20 Max: $100–$200
Gemini (none) Google AI Pro: $19.99 Google AI Ultra: $249.99
Grok SuperGrok Lite: $10 SuperGrok: $30 SuperGrok Heavy: $300

All four also have a free tier with tighter limits. For most people, the standard plan at roughly $20–30 a month is the sweet spot.

ChatGPT: the all-rounder

ChatGPT is the most widely used assistant and has the broadest feature set: text, voice conversations, image generation, file and data analysis, web search, and custom GPTs you can build for repeat tasks.

Best for: people who want one tool that does a bit of everything, and anyone who uses AI for many different kinds of tasks in a day.

Watch out for: the jump from Plus ($20) to Pro ($200) is steep. Pro makes sense only if you regularly hit Plus limits or need the most advanced models all day.

Claude: the writer and coder

Claude, made by Anthropic, is known for natural-sounding writing, careful reasoning and strong coding help. It handles long documents well, which makes it a favorite for editing, research summaries and working through big codebases.

Best for: copywriting, editing, long reports, and developers.

Watch out for: usage limits on the Pro plan can feel tight during heavy sessions. The Max plans raise them, at a much higher price.

Gemini: the Google Workspace pick

Gemini is Google's assistant. Its biggest advantage is integration: it works inside Gmail, Docs, Sheets and Drive, and Google AI Pro also bundles extra Google One storage. Higher tiers include access to Google's video model, Veo.

Best for: people and teams who already run their work through Google Workspace.

Watch out for: if you don't use Google's apps much, a lot of the plan's value goes unused.

Grok: the real-time pick

Grok, from xAI, is closely tied to X (formerly Twitter). Its standout feature is real-time awareness of posts and trending topics, which makes it useful for following news, social trends and public reaction as it happens.

Best for: social media managers, trend watchers, and anyone who wants up-to-the-minute context.

Watch out for: SuperGrok costs more than the other standard plans ($30 vs about $20), so make sure you'll use the real-time features.

What about Perplexity?

Perplexity isn't a direct competitor to the four above. It's an AI search engine that answers questions with cited sources. Many people pair a chat assistant with Perplexity for research. Perplexity Pro costs about $20 a month, and the free tier covers light use.

Do you need more than one?

Probably not. But if you're a heavy user, different models really are better at different jobs, and many people end up paying for two or three. That adds up fast:

ToolPlanMonthly
ChatGPTPro$200
SuperGrokStandard$30
ElevenLabsCreator$22
ClaudePro$20
PerplexityPro$20
GeminiGoogle AI Pro$19.99
Bought separately$311.99
Luxury Tools membership$29.95
Approximate monthly list prices in USD, checked October 2026.

If you want access to several of them without paying for each, the Luxury Tools membership bundles ChatGPT Pro, Claude, Gemini, SuperGrok and Perplexity, plus ElevenLabs and 30+ other tools, for $29.95 a month.

The bottom line

Start with one assistant on its standard plan, and pick it by how you work: ChatGPT for variety, Claude for writing and code, Gemini for Google Workspace, Grok for real-time trends. Use free tiers to try the others. Only pay for more once you know you'll use them, and then compare the cost against a bundle. For more ways to trim the bill, read our AI subscription audit.
