The short answer: ChatGPT Plus costs $20 a month, and OpenAI has no standing discount or yearly plan for it. The cheapest real options are the student offer (four free months, if you claim it by October 31, 2026), the 50% cancel offer some subscribers see, or switching to ChatGPT Go at $8 if you don't need everything Plus does.
Here's every way to pay less, cheapest first, with what each one actually costs and the catch.
What ChatGPT costs
US monthly prices, checked October 2026:
| Plan | Monthly | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Tight limits; may show ads in the US |
| Go | $8 | About 10x the Free limits; may show ads; no Deep Research or agent features |
| Plus | $20 | Monthly billing only; no yearly discount |
| Pro | $100, $200 or $500 | Three usage levels; see how to get ChatGPT Pro cheaper |
So "cheaper Plus" really means one of two things: getting Plus itself for less, or getting most of what you'd use Plus for at a lower price.
1. The student offer: $0 for four months
Cost: free for four months, then $20 a month.
OpenAI's 2026 Back to School offer gives eligible college and graduate students four free monthly billing periods of Plus. You verify that you're a student through SheerID, and you have to claim it by October 31, 2026. New users and existing monthly Plus subscribers can both claim it, once.
After four months it renews at $20 unless you cancel. If you cancel early, you lose the free months you haven't used. Check the official help article for which countries and schools qualify.
Best for: students, but only until the deadline.
2. The cancel offer: about $10 a month for three months
Cost: $10 a month for three months, if you're offered it.
Some Plus subscribers see a "Keep Plus for 50% off" option when they start to cancel (Settings → Account → Manage → Cancel). People who got it paid $30 for three months. It doesn't show up for everyone, and OpenAI doesn't say who gets it. Some people see a pause option instead.
If you take it, set a reminder for when the three months end, because it goes back to $20 after that.
Best for: current subscribers. It costs nothing to check.
3. Switch to ChatGPT Go: $8 a month
Cost: $8 a month, 60% less than Plus.
Go is OpenAI's own cheaper plan. You get the same ChatGPT with much higher limits than Free, but it leaves out most of the heavy features, such as deep research, agent mode, the strongest reasoning mode and video generation. In the US it may also show ads, which Plus doesn't.
Look at what you actually use. If it's mostly writing, questions, summaries and the odd image, Go is probably enough.
Best for: everyday users who rarely hit limits or use the advanced tools.
4. Stay on Free and pay only when you need to
Cost: $0, plus $20 in the months you're busy.
Plus is billed monthly and you can cancel any time. So you can stay on Free most of the year and turn Plus on for a month with a big project, a job search or exam season. Your chats stay in your account either way.
Best for: people whose use comes in bursts.
5. Check for partner and service offers
Cost: varies.
OpenAI sometimes runs promotions with partners, and it has a separate Plus offer for US service members and veterans. These come and go, and some are only for people who have never paid for Plus. Look at OpenAI's help center before paying full price. Skip the coupon sites: their ChatGPT Plus "promo codes" are almost always expired or made up. Real OpenAI offers appear in your account or on OpenAI's own pages.
6. Shared and resold accounts: cheap, but risky
Cost: about $3–7 a month.
Sellers on marketplaces and Telegram offer "Plus" for a few dollars by splitting one account between several people. OpenAI's terms don't allow account sharing, so these accounts can be banned without warning, and you have no refund when that happens. Very cheap offers are sometimes paid for with stolen cards. Everyone on the account can also read your chats.
If you want to try a shared option anyway, choose one with a track record, and read Are tool bundles worth it? first.
If you want more than ChatGPT
Many people searching for cheaper Plus also pay for Claude, Gemini, Canva or a voice tool. If that's you, the cheapest setup isn't a cheaper ChatGPT. It's paying less across all of them. Here's every way to get AI tools cheaper, side by side.
A bundle like the Luxury Tools membership gives you shared access to ChatGPT Pro, Claude, Gemini, SuperGrok, Perplexity, ElevenLabs and 25+ other tools for $29.95 a month. That's more than Plus alone, so it only pays off if you'd otherwise buy two or more of those tools.
| Tool | Plan | Monthly |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT | Pro | $200 |
| SuperGrok | Standard | $30 |
| ElevenLabs | Creator | $22 |
| Claude | Pro | $20 |
| Perplexity | Pro | $20 |
| Gemini | Google AI Pro | $19.99 |
| Bought separately | $311.99 | |
| Luxury Tools membership | $29.95 | |
