The short answer: Claude Pro costs $20 a month, and Anthropic has no student discount or promo codes for it. The cheapest real options are paying yearly ($17 a month), getting it free through your university if it has Claude for Education, or using Claude through a $20 multi-model app if you'd pay for other AI tools anyway.

Here's every way to pay less, cheapest first, with what each one actually costs and the catch.

Bar chart of ways to get Claude: Pro billed monthly $20, AI All-Access Pack $20 for four models, Pro billed yearly $17, the Free plan $0 with lower limits, and Claude through a university $0 if offered
What you pay per month with each option in this guide.

What Claude costs

US monthly prices, checked October 2026:

PlanMonthlyGood to know
Free$0Doesn't expire; tight limits
Pro$20, or $17 billed yearlyAt least 5x the Free usage per five-hour session; includes Claude Code
Maxfrom $100Two levels ($100 and $200), billed monthly only
Team$25 a seat, or $20 billed yearlyMinimum two seats

So "cheaper Pro" really means one of two things: getting Pro itself for less, or getting enough Claude for less than $20.

1. Claude for Education: $0 through your university

Cost: free, if your school has it.

Anthropic doesn't sell a student plan, but it does sell Claude to universities. If your school has a Claude for Education deal, students and staff get Pro-level access by signing in with their school email. Try logging in to Claude with your school address, or check your university's IT pages.

Watch out for: you can't buy this yourself, and you lose it when you leave the school. Sites selling "Claude student promo codes" are making them up. Real offers only appear on Anthropic's own pages or in your account.

Best for: students and staff at universities that have signed up.

2. Stay on Free and pay only when you need to

Cost: $0, plus $20 in the months you're busy.

The Free plan doesn't expire, and Pro is billed monthly with no contract. So you can stay on Free most of the year and turn on Pro for a month with a big project, a thesis or a launch. Your chats stay in your account either way.

Best for: people whose use comes in bursts.

3. Pay yearly: $17 a month

Cost: $200 a year, about $17 a month. Saves $40 a year.

Pro is the only Claude plan with a yearly option. You pay $200 up front instead of $240 over 12 months. It's the only official discount Anthropic offers to individuals.

Watch out for: only do this if you already use Claude most weeks. If you stop using it in month three, the yearly plan cost you more than paying monthly would have.

Best for: daily Claude users who are sure they'll stay.

4. Use the API and pay per use

Cost: depends on usage; often a few dollars a month for light use.

Anthropic's API charges per message instead of a flat fee. Paired with a chat app that accepts an API key, you pay only for what you use. Light users often spend less than $20. Heavy users, especially with long documents or coding, can spend much more.

Best for: technical users with light or uneven use.

5. Get Claude in a $20 multi-model app

Cost: $20 a month, with ChatGPT, Gemini and Grok included.

The AI All-Access Pack, sold by Bluehost, Network Solutions and Domain.com, puts Claude, ChatGPT, Gemini and Grok in one app for $20 a month. That's the price of Claude Pro alone, so it's only cheaper if you'd also pay for another assistant. Poe works in a similar way from $4.99, paid for with points.

Watch out for: you use Claude through someone else's app, so you don't get Claude's own Projects, Claude Code or connectors. The $20 is an introductory price that renews at the then-current rate. Compare all the options in the best AI subscription bundles.

Best for: people who'd otherwise pay for two or more assistants.

6. Shared and resold accounts: cheap, but risky

Cost: a few dollars a month.

Sellers on marketplaces and Telegram offer "Claude Pro" for a few dollars by splitting one account between several people. Anthropic's terms don't allow account sharing, so these accounts can be closed without warning, with no refund. Everyone on the account can read your chats, and shared accounts hit Claude's usage limits fast.

If you want to try a shared option anyway, choose one with a track record, and read Are tool bundles worth it? first.

Pro or Max: don't overbuy

Max costs five or ten times as much as Pro. It's only worth it if you hit Pro's limits every week, usually from long coding sessions in Claude Code or very long documents. If you only hit the limits now and then, wait for the five-hour window to reset, or switch to a lighter model for simple tasks. Both are free.

The Team plan isn't a shortcut either. At $25 a seat with a two-seat minimum, it costs more than Pro for one person.

If you want more than Claude

Many people who pay for Claude also pay for ChatGPT, Gemini, Canva or a voice tool. If that's you, the cheapest setup isn't a cheaper Claude. It's paying less across all of them. Here's every way to get AI tools cheaper, side by side.

A bundle like the Luxury Tools membership gives you shared access to Claude, ChatGPT Pro, Gemini, SuperGrok, Perplexity, ElevenLabs and 25+ other tools for $29.95 a month. That's more than Pro alone, so it only pays off if you'd otherwise buy two or more of those tools.
